Conversation 2: Dr. Cory Simpson
November 18, 2020 • 7PM • RSVP HERE Dr. Simpson is an Instructor of Dermatology at the University of Pennsylvania. He completed his A.B. in Biology at Washington University in St. Louis. He then moved to Northwestern University in Chicago, earning his M.D. and a Ph.D. in Cell Biology, studying proteins targeted in skin disease. Dr. Simpson came to Philadelphia for dermatology training at Penn, served as Chief Resident, and specializes in caring for patients with autoimmune and genetic skin disorders. He spends most of his time on laboratory research funded by the National Institutes of Health, using high-resolution microscopy to understand how the epidermis develops and becomes defective in diseases. In his volunteer efforts, Dr. Simpson aims to expand access to specialist care for disadvantaged patients. Since 2015, he has directed Penn’s dermatology clinic at Puentes de Salud, a charitable clinic serving uninsured patients with a focus on Philadelphia’s Latinx immigrant community. As a member of the American Academy of Dermatology’s Teledermatology Task Force, he optimized a free smartphone app to allow off-site dermatologists to receive photographs from primary care providers and offer guidance on managing skin diseases. He continues to advocate for leveraging telemedicine technology to improve healthcare access, especially for patients facing barriers to care. |
